University of Southern Mississippi student Rachael Reeves recently placed second in the national “Press the President” writing contest for her submission, “The Government's Responsibility in the American Obesity Epidemic.”

“I am very excited to have been awarded this honor, and thank the University for notifying us as students about these types of competitions and encouraging us to not only build our resumes but gain experience that allows us to apply the skills we learn in class,” Reeves said.

The contest was designed to encourage political journalism in college students on relevant topics.

“All of the entries were outstanding and showed a considerable amount of research and thoughtfulness,” said contest judge Scott Sobel in a press release.

Reeves, a Monticello, Miss., native is majoring in public relations. She is the daughter of Keith and Robin Reeves.
