In celebration of June as National Homeownership Month, a free community resource housing fair will be held Thursday, June 4, from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. at the Jackie Dole Sherrill Community Center at 220 West Front St., in downtown Hattiesburg.

The University of Southern Mississippi Institute for Disability Studies' Home of Your Own (HOYO) program is partnering with the City of Hattiesburg, the Mississippi Home Corporation, USDA Rural Housing, the Renaissance Corporation and The First Bank to hold the event.

“Information will be provided on loan products and grants available for homeownership for eligible homebuyers,” said Cassie Hicks, assistant director of housing at the Institute for Disability Studies. “Information on fair housing and foreclosure prevention will also be provided.”

This free event is open to the public. Housing counselors and lenders will be available, and refreshments will be served.

“June is National Homeownership Month,” said Hicks. “National studies show in most areas it's cheaper to own than rent, and this month is a good time to focus on buying.”
