The fourth annual Jim Franks Merry Fishmas Fun Run is set for 8 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 in Ocean Springs, Miss. Event registration will begin at Washington Avenue and Front Beach Drive at 8 a.m. The 1-mile run will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the 5k-race will begin at 9 a.m.

The event will honor Dr. Jim Franks, senior research scientist with the Department of Fisheries Research and Development at The University of Southern Mississippi. Franks is a well-respected fisheries authority in the Mississippi Gulf Coast community and a key research contributor at the University's Gulf Coast Research Laboratory.

The University of Southern Mississippi American Fisheries Society (USM AFS) student subunit, organizers of the event, encourages all runners to dress in their most festive Christmas/Fishmas attire and enjoy Ocean Springs' beautiful Front Beach and Biloxi Bridge for a great cause.

“The Jim Franks Merry Fishmas Fun Run supports the mission of the USM AFS subunit by helping graduate students attend meetings across the country to present the results of their research,” said race organizer Morgan Corey. “We are also holding a food drive and will collect canned goods on the day of the race to support The Lord is My Help food pantry.”

In addition, the University's Marine Education Center staff will be on hand to provide educational activities for children and families throughout the morning.

Registration is $25 on race day and $20 for early registration. The registration fee includes a t-shirt commemorating the event. Prizes will be awarded to top race finishers and for most creative Christmas/Fishmas themed costumes.
