Lifelong Learning Program at Southern Miss Expanding to Gulf Park Campus

Mon, 01/05/2015 - 11:07am

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at The University of Southern Mississippi is expanding its programs to the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

OLLI has offered programs at the Hattiesburg campus for the past 23 years.  Programming is geared toward individuals 50 years of age or older, with any level of education, working or retired.

The OLLI at Southern Miss is one of 117 OLLIs across the country providing educational, exercise, and social opportunities to adults.  The premise behind OLLI is that learning at any age is fun and a great way to keep mind, body, and spirit healthy.

“We are excited to announce that we will be expanding to the Gulf Coast area and holding classes at the USM Gulf Park campus in Long Beach,” said Becky Vinzant, Director of OLLI.

An informational meeting will be held on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 10 a.m., in the Hardy Hall Ballroom on the Gulf Park Campus. Classes will begin Feb. 9.  Persons who are interested or who are unable to attend, should contact Robin Bixler at 601-264-2780.

Each semester OLLI will offer approximately 30-36 college-quality courses, seminars and field trips in areas such as history, health, music, computers, art, literature, science, philosophy and more.

“OLLI members are adults with wide-ranging interests who enjoy learning without having to take tests, write papers or receive grades. Not only do they enjoy learning, they also enjoy exploring together on field trips and gathering together informally after classes for lunch or dinner,” said Vinzant.
