Percussion Ensemble Concert to Feature Internationally Acclaimed Artists

The University of Southern Mississippi Percussion Ensembles will perform their fall concert Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mannoni Performing Arts Center auditorium. This free concert will feature internationally acclaimed musicians Tony Miceli and Oscar Albrieu.

Director of Percussion Studies Dr. John Wooton and his students are in the process of preparing for the event.

"It will be a very exciting concert,” said Ian McClafin, first year DMA student. “We have been working hard to get the music together and hope that the audience will enjoy it.  This concert will have a little bit of everything from drumline to jazz and steel band. It will be a fun night.”

Tony Miceli is an internationally renowned vibraphonist. He has been performing steadily on the jazz scene, including at countless jazz festivals, percussion festivals, jazz clubs, colleges and even prisons. He is a performer, educator and innovator, not just as a musician, but also as the creator of vibesworkshop.com, his vibraphone online school of music with over 3,000 members.

As a group leader, sideman, and recording artist, he has performed with numerous top musicians including David Liebman, Jimmy Bruno, Ken Peplowski, John Blake, Diane Monroe, John Swana, Joe Magnarelli, Steve Slagle, Larry McKenna and many others.

Oscare Albrieu Roca is an Argentinian percussionist and teacher. He is the percussion coordinator of Youth's Orchestras Project of the Argentinian Government, which has more than 150 orchestras around the country. He has also worked more than 10 years as a percussionist in the Philharmonic Orchestra of Buenos Aires at the Teatro Colón.

Roca has taught and performed in United States, Spain, England, France, Costa Rica, Germany, Pananá, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Cuba. He commissioned and premiered several pieces for Solo Percussion, Percussion and Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, and Duos for Percussion and Bandoneón, as well as played as a soloist with several renowned orchestras in Argentina.
