The University of Southern Mississippi's Research Initiative on Social Justice and Equity (RISE), Office of Multicultural Programs and Services, and Student Association of Social Workers will sponsor Social Justice Movie Night Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in Gonzales Auditorium (room 108) of the Liberal Arts Building on the Hattiesburg campus. The featured movie is “Come Hell or High Water: The Battle for Turkey Creek.” Admission is free and refreshments will be provided.

“Come Hell or High Water” centers around the Mississippi community of Turkey Creek, which was settled by freed slaves just after the Civil War. It follows the painful but inspiring journey of Derrick Evans, a Boston teacher who moves home to coastal Mississippi when the graves of his ancestors are bulldozed to make way for the sprawling city of Gulfport.

Over the course of a decade, Evans and his neighbors stand up to powerful corporate interests and politicians, and face ordeals that included Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster in their struggle for self-determination and environmental justice.

Following the movie, a discussion will follow facilitated by Derrick Evans, faculty and staff.
