Southern Miss College of Health Honors Exceptional Students

Cody Bremner, a doctoral student in the School of Human Performance and Recreation, received the school's Outstanding Doctoral Student award. On hand for the presentation was his adviser, Dr. Bill Holcomb, director of the Southern Miss Athletic Training Program.

The College of Health at The University of Southern Mississippi recognized exceptional students during its annual awards night Tuesday, April 14 at the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

Mackenzie E. Thaxton, incoming College of Health Ambassador president, thanked Alanna L. Fopiano for her service as past president. Thaxton recognized senior Ambassadors Tyler L. Broady, Alanna D. Buckley, Ryan A. Domiano, Alanna L. Fopiano, Tiffany D. Howard, Trent M. Johnson, A. Kristen Lee, Wenona J. Mellott, Andrew W. Sanderson, William B. Stevens II and Jennifer M. Truong for their service to the college.

Dr. Michael Forster, dean of the college, presented the Dean's Council Award for Campus Leadership to Amy N. Henderson, the Dean's Council Community Service Award to Jimmie G. Richmond, Jr. and the Dean's Council Graduate Research Award to Amir A. Alakaam.

Students honored from the Department of Nutrition and Food Systems were Lisa R. Christopher as the Mississippi Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Nominee for Outstanding Dietetic Intern, Marie C. Erobu as the Mississippi Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics Nominee for Outstanding Didatic Intern, Virginia C. Smith as the Southern Miss Outstanding Dietetic Intern, Sermin Aras as the Outstanding Junior in Nutrition and Food Systems, Elizabeth C. Hartley as the Outstanding Senior in Nutrition and Food Systems, Morgan L. Faulk as the Outstanding Master's Student in Nutrition and Food Systems and Amir A. Alakaam as the Outstanding Doctoral Student in Nutrition and Food Systems.

In the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, the Gulfport Scottish Rite Annual Scholarship went to Camryn K. Mitchell, the Peggy Revels Elward Outstanding Senior went to Patricia N. Chastain, the Sertoma Outstanding Graduate Student awards went to Jessica M. Holt in audiology, Robyn T. Davidson in early oral intervention and Hayley J. Corder in speech language pathology. The Speech and Hearing Sciences Outstanding Graduate Student awards went to Lee H. Weeks in audiology, Ashley N. LeCates in early oral intervention and Anna K. Ransler in speech language pathology.

The Department of Public Health honored Samantha S. Wells from the Hattiesburg campus and Grace E. Darrow from the Gulf Park campus with the Undergraduate Service Award. The Outstanding Undergraduate Scholarship award was presented to Allison O. Knight from the Hattiesburg campus and Vanessa F. Cummings from the Gulf Park campus. Also receiving awards were Jimmie G. Richmond, Jr., Lynn Cook Hartwig Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award; John M. Conner, Outstanding Master of Public Health Research Award and Selena L. Frederick, Alton B. Cobb Outstanding Master of Public Health Award.

The School of Social Work recognized students for their academic accomplishments.  Awards of Merit were presented to undergraduates Sue V. Bell, Amber N. Goodwin, Wenona J. Mellott from the Hattiesburg campus and Veronica P. Bergendahl, Jena M. Brauer, Ashley N. Lewis, Rachel L. Meredith, Anita Pitts, Jessica Ross from the Gulf Park campus. Master of Social Work students who received awards for academic excellence included Brittany D. Bayless, Elizabeth P. Beasley, Alexandria M. Camp, Anne H. Cupit, Leanna N. Howard, Sarah G. Ladner, Jesse Mitchell, Ann M. Rodio, Kristine P. Schmitz, Emily L. Smith, Heather R. Stewart and Valeri C. Stewart.

The School of Human Performance and Recreation presented awards for outstanding scholarship and distinguished leadership in the following academic areas:

*In athletic training, Outstanding Scholarship Award to Micah T. Davis and Distinguished Leadership Award to Megan M. Cook.

*In exercise science, Outstanding Scholarship Award to Michael R. Robbins and Distinguished Leadership Award to Emily L. Zumbro.

*In kinesiotherapy, Outstanding Scholarship Award to Lauren E. Bartholomay and Distinguished Leadership Award to Jason S. West.

*In physical education, Outstanding Scholarship Award to Joshua K. Moore and Distinguished Leadership Award to Rebekah J. Richard.

*In recreation, Outstanding Scholarship Award to Brittany M. Carraway and Distinguished Leadership Award to Shawn-Ashlee Davis.

*In sport coaching education, Outstanding Scholarship Award to Chance L. Boyd and Distinguished Leadership Award to Amber L. Clapp.

*In sport management, Outstanding Scholarship Award to Ryan A. Argotsinger and Distinguished Leadership Award to Jenifer M. Truong.

Overall awards in the School of Human Performance and Recreation were presented to Preston L. Bell for Outstanding Undergraduate Scholarship, Danielle N. Taylor for Distinguished Undergraduate Leadership, Jeffrey H. Johnson for Outstanding Master's Student and Cody B. Bremner for Outstanding Doctoral Student.
