James Fox, a physical education student in the School of Kinesiology at The University of Southern Mississippi, was selected to participate in The Southern District Future Professional Leadership Conference (FPLC), hosted by the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) America. The conference was held Oct. 8-10 at Eastern Tennessee State University.

“James is a natural leader in the classroom,” said Dr. Robert Doan, assistant professor of kinesiology. “I am excited for the opportunity he had to learn how to continue to develop his leadership skills, and be a leader in his profession for a lifetime.”

This is the second year in a row that a student from Southern Miss has been selected to attend the leadership conference. Attendees are selected based on professor nominations and personal application. The conference provides students with an opportunity to develop leadership and professional skills.

“We are striving to be the best physical education program in the South and having students attend the conference helps in this process,” said Doan.

Fox said he participated in sessions for professional development, networking, resume development, and how to integrate current technology into the classroom. Team building activities included rock climbing and a hike through the Appalachian Trail. As president of the Physical Education Majors (PEM) Club at Southern Miss, Fox also learned how to improve the student organization.

Fox encouraged students majoring in physical education to participate in similar opportunities. “These types of opportunities are so valuable to your personal education and future professional life,” he said.

“I chose this degree because of my love for a healthy lifestyle and the desire to share that with others,” said Fox. “My desire is to teach others how to live a healthy lifestyle and to be the best version of themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually.”
