Southern Miss Recreational Sports Recognizes Student Employees with Awards and Scholarships

Each year, The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Recreational Sports honors outstanding student staff members and graduating seniors at the Student Staff Appreciation and Awards night. 

Southern Miss Rec Sports held the 2015 awards night at the end of the spring semester at the Southern Miss Payne Center. The awards night gave professional staff members the opportunity to say thank you to the students for their hard work. During the banquet, awards and scholarships were given to outstanding student staff members.

2014-2015 Student Staff Award Winners:

• Walker Perkins of Gray, Ga., a senior majoring in Kinesiotherapy, was awarded the Outstanding Equipment Issue Attendant of the year

• Jonathan Reed of Memphis, Tenn., a junior majoring in Recreation Administration, was awarded the Comcast Golf Classic Scholarship Award recognizing a Recreational Sports student staff member for their essay “What Southern Miss Means to Me”

• Dimitri Smith of Long Beach, Miss., a senior majoring in Media Production, was awarded the Evelyn Kwan Green Marketing Employee of the Year

• Brance Crane of Moss Point, Miss, a sophomore majoring in Mathematics-licensure, was awarded the James A. Townley Award recognizing the most outstanding Intramural Sports Official of the Year

• Dale Rico of Long Beach, Miss., a junior majoring in Computer Science, was awarded the Keith's Superstores Scholarship recognizing a Recreational Sports student staff member for dedication to volunteerism

• Taylor Brown of Columbus, Miss., a junior majoring in Kinesiotherapy, was awarded the Chris McGee Facility Supervisor Employee of the Year and the Peter E. Durkee Award recognizing the most outstanding Recreational Sports student staff member

• Conner Miller of Picayune, Miss, a senior majoring in Economics, was awarded the Keith's Superstores Scholarship recognizing a Recreational Sports student staff member for dedication to volunteerism

• Bria McKinney of Birmingham, Ala., a junior majoring in Psychology, was awarded the Mike “Coach” Guiles Outstanding Aquatics Employee of the Year and Micky & Neely Harrington Scholarship recognizing a Recreational Sports student staff member for dedication to community service

• Mackenzie Carmody of Jackson, Miss., a junior majoring in Exercise Science, was awarded the Tricia Linton Outstanding Sales & Welcome Center Employee of the Year

• William Dawkins of Starkville, Miss., a senior majoring in Recreation Administration, was awarded the Outstanding Fitness Attendant of the Year

• Olivia Oswalt of Dallas, Texas, a senior majoring in Dance, was awarded the Outstanding Group Exercise Instructor of the year

• Steven Knecht of Metairie, La., a senior majoring in Sports Management, was awarded the Steve “Big Daddy” Rey Intramural Sports Supervisor Employee of the Year. This was his second year to win the award. Knecht also won the Sid and Joni Gonsoulin Student Development Scholarship honoring a recreational sports student staff member for dedication to student development and the Keith's Superstores Scholarship honoring a recreational staff student member for dedication to volunteerism.

• Rebecca Hassell of Boise, Idaho, a sophomore majoring in Exercise Science, was awarded the Outstanding Personal Trainer of the year

• Kashondra Smith of Hattiesburg, Miss., a senior majoring in Public Health with an emphasis in Health Policy and Administration, was awarded the Outstanding Office Assistant of the year

• John Davenport of Lake Charles, La., a junior majoring in Exercise Science, was awarded the Student Affairs Student Service Scholarship honoring a recreational sports leader in student services. He also won the Bruce and Virginia Wilgus “Making a Difference” Award honoring a recreational sports student staff member for dedication in helping to make a difference.

• Carter Kittrell of Vicksburg, Miss, a senior majoring in Recreation Administration, was awarded the Keith's Superstores Scholarship recognizing a recreational sports student staff member for dedication to volunteerism

• Mary Blair Ward of Columbus, Miss., a sophomore majoring in Nursing, was awarded the Bruce and Virginia Wilgus “Making a Difference” Award honoring a recreational sports student staff member for dedication in helping to make a difference.
