Southern Miss Student Newspaper Takes Home Awards

The Student Printz, the student run newspaper at The University of Southern Mississippi, took home a number of Best of the South awards at the Southeast Journalism Conference (SEJC) 2015.

The Student Printz was ranked in the top 10 in the Best College Newspaper category and received fourth place for Best College Website.

β€œI am so proud of everyone on the Printz staff for contributing to these many awards,” said executive editor Kathryn Miller. β€œIt is such an honor to be selected in the top 10 best college newspapers in the Southeast. It is shown through our consistent hard work and commitment to producing a diverse range of news for the campus community.” 

The following past and present staff members of the Student Printz news organization and other student media at Southern Miss were recognized with awards:

  • Best arts and entertainment writer, Crystal Garner, second place
  • Best feature writer, Ardan Thornhill, seventh place
  • Best artist/illustrator, Aaron Joseph Stewart, sixth place
  • Best graphic designer, Cody Bass, first place
  • Best special event editor, Kathryn Miller, sixth place
  • Best hard news reporter, Emily DeVoe, first place
  • Best TV news feature reporter, Wilton Jackson, 10th place

More than 500 entries were submitted for the contest from approximately 33 schools.

The staff also competed in onsite competitions based on their field of study ranging from photography to public relations. The following students placed: copy editing, Yolanda Cruz, honorable mention; public relations, Mary Sergeant and Kara Davidson, first place and sports photography, Aaron Joseph Stewart, second place.

The Student Printz placed third overall in the onsite competition team championship.
