University Police Arrest Student in Domestic Abuse Case

(UPDATED): This story was updated on Friday, Jan. 23, to reflect additional charges filed on Thursday, Jan. 22 which also resulted in an increase in bond for the accused.

A University of Southern Mississippi student was arrested by University Police Jan. 20 in connection with a domestic abuse case.

Joseph T. King, 40, of Jackson, Miss. has been charged with domestic violence/aggravated assault, kidnapping and rape, and is currently being held in the Forrest County Jail on a $500,000 bond. The victim is also a Southern Miss student. The incident occurred in the 300 block of 37th Avenue.

University Police Det. Capt. Rusty Keyes said the arrest was made after the victim reported the incident Jan. 20 to University Police. Capt. Keyes said an investigation in the case is ongoing.

“We encourage members of our campus community who believe they are a victim of domestic abuse or are in a domestic abuse situation and need assistance to call us,” Keyes said. “The University and University Police Department have resources that can help you.”
