National Marathon Safety and Security Summit set for Dec. 12-14

Marathon and endurance event officials from across the country will converge on Dec. 12-14 in Biloxi, Miss. for the third annual National Marathon Safety and Security Summit, hosted by The University of Southern Mississippi's National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4).
“The unique aspect of this year's summit will be the integration of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Marathon into the enhancement of the 3rd edition of the national marathon safety and security best practices,” said Dr. Lou Marciani, director of NCS4.
“We are proud to partner with the marathon (Dec. 11th) to look at what safety and security lessons can be learned from the recent event and bring that information back to our Summit attendees—through the auditors and technologies that will be a part of this inaugural marathon.”
In addition to lessons learned from the Mississippi Gulf Coast Marathon, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from national experts on current security issues, such as building resiliency, recognizing anomalous behavior, infrastructure protection strategies of Unmanned Aerial Systems, and the challenges found in event planning, decision-making and training.
Ronald C. Stanko, the Deputy Director of the Governor's Office of Homeland Security (Harrisburg, PA), will serve as one of the keynote speakers at the summit and educate the attendees on Building Resiliency.
“Mass gatherings, events, stadiums, arenas, and marathons are synonymous with the American lifestyle,” said Stanko.
“Regular prevention and protection exercise programs continue to be one of the best sources of building resiliency in this dynamic threat environment.”
Attendees will include event administrators and staff (representing marathons, half marathons, 10K, 5K, and endurance events), local/state law enforcement, government officials, emergency managers, fire/hazMat and emergency medical/health services, city planners, governing bodies, and sport commissions.
In addition to keynote speakers, panel presentations, and networking opportunities, attendees will have participate in moderated discussions (round robin format) to enhance best practices for designated issues within the following areas:
