The University of Southern Mississippi Physical Plant has launched a campaign to collect supplies to aid victims of the recent flooding in south Louisiana. More than 40,000 homes have been affected and 11 fatalities recorded to date, and a federal emergency was declared for the area that includes 30 of the state's 64 parishes.

“It's heartbreaking to see what's happened to our neighbors in Louisiana, and we want to do what we can to help them in their time of need,” said Michelle Shinall, assistant director of marketing and campus relations for the Physical Plant. “Our students, faculty and staff are known for their generosity and kindness, and I'm confident we'll have a great response.”

The following list of items can be brought on or before Thursday, Aug. 25 to the Physical Plant office, located just off of West Fourth Street in the gated area next to the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office. The supplies will then be given to Louisiana's Capital Area United Way for distribution.

*For people: bottled water; non-perishable food items; toilet paper; paper towels; toiletries (soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, etc.); diapers and wipes; feminine hygiene products; new towels/washcloths.

*For pets: pet food; shampoo; leashes; cat litter.

*For cleaning: rags/wipes; bleach; detergent; gloves; mops; any other general cleaning supplies.
