Saxophone Day 2016 Set for March 5 at Southern Miss

Fri, 02/26/2016 - 03:35pm | By: Mike Lopinto

The School of Music at The University of Southern Mississippi will be hosting Saxophone Day 2016 on Saturday, March 5. Student registration begins at 9 a.m. in the Intermezzo@Woods Gallery and events run until 7 p.m.

The participation fee for the event is $30 advanced registration and $40 the day of the event. The concert is free and open to the public.

Featured this year will be New Orleans Based jazz artist Ray Moore and Polish Classical Saxophonist Dariusz Samol. “Dariusz is one of the most active saxophonists in Eastern Europe and has established an exceptional studio at the Academy of Music in Szczecin, Poland,” said Dr. Larry Gwozdz, professor of Music at Southern Miss. “He is a regular collaborator with the Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra as well as being a featured soloist with many orchestras including the Stadt Sankt Petersburg Symphony Orchestra.”

“Ray Moore is in demand as a jazz artist both in New Orleans and in Brazil, added Gwozdz. “He shares his love of things Brazilian with his New Orleans-based groups Trio de Janeiro and Brasilliance and a Brazilian based group RiOrleans. This year promises to be another exciting celebration of all things saxophone.”

Saxophone Day was started in 2015 as an event to gather the current saxophone studio members along with interested prospective students and area professionals to enjoy saxophone music of all kinds and learn more about the instrument. It was started as a team effort between Gwozdz and Larry Panella, Director of Jazz Studies (and a saxophonist as well).

The first event included two alums with the jazz side of things being handled by Tom Luer (MM-Saxophone Performance) Los Angeles based jazz and studio musician, and Curt Altarac (MM- Saxophone Performance) Expert Saxophone Technician and Designer and owner of MusicMedic.com.

“What transpired was a great weekend of hearing saxophone, playing saxophone, and talking saxophone. It was a tremendous success and so we are back with Round 2 - Saxophone Day 2016,” said Panella.

There will be saxophone swag to give away from Cannonball Musical Instruments, a few new saxophones for trying out supplied by Mississippi Music, and a lot of great music provided buy guests and students.
