Southern Miss Officials, Engineers Assessing Sinkhole in Campus Parking Lot

Tue, 01/12/2016 - 05:44pm

University of Southern Mississippi officials are continuing to assess the impact of a sinkhole that appeared Tuesday morning in the parking lot between Oseola McCarty Hall and Scianna Hall on the Hattiesburg campus.

The sinkhole, visibly measuring approximately 4 feet by 3 feet, is larger beneath the surface.

City of Hattiesburg engineers continue to evaluate the scope of the damage underground. They have been able to determine that the cavity does not extend beyond the parking lot into adjacent streets or property.

All roads near the sinkhole site, including Eagle Walk and Ray Guy Way, have reopened. Scianna Hall also reopened to faculty and staff this morning.

Residents of McCarty Hall returning to campus this weekend for the start of the spring semester are asked to park in the Hillcrest Hall lot.
