André J. Heath, Assistant to the Dean for Recruitment, Retention and Strategic Initiatives in the College of Science and Technology has been awarded The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg Campus Staff Council Service Award by the USM Staff Council.

The purpose of any Staff Council scholarship or service award is to recognize a university employee for dedication, leadership, services and unselfish contribution of time and effort in the promotion of the mission and goals of the University.

Dana Berry, Academic Advising Coordinator for the Office of the University Registrar nominated Heath. “In first meeting André, his selflessness was very evident, his leadership skills (both in and out of the office) were second to none and his knowledge on opportunities for students in STEM programs was immense,” said Berry.

While advising, mentoring, and training a diverse population, Heath is responsible for the coordination of activities, events and programs that encourage the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

“I am honored to be recognized as this year's award recipient by such a distinguished group of servant leaders. The USM Staff Council does an outstanding job in representing our staff and promoting excellence in service,” said Heath.

The USM Staff Council was established in 1989 to serve as a representative voice for staff members working throughout the University from the Gulf Coast, Stennis and Hattiesburg campuses.
