MHAC Project Offers ACA Enrollment Help Through Dec. 15 Deadline

Wed, 12/06/2017 - 10:21am

Mississippians who need help enrolling or re-enrolling in health coverage through Healthcare.gov only have through Dec. 15, the national deadline, to get coverage for 2018.

The Mississippi Health Access Collaborative (MHAC), a federally funded project through the University of Southern Mississippi College of Health, offers free in-person enrollment assistance across the 24 southernmost counties in the state.

The Affordable Care Act has not changed, and Mississippians can still enroll in quality, affordable health insurance for 2018. Kathryn Rehner, MHAC project director, says 2018 rates are among the lowest she has seen.

Many enrolling in 2018 plans are getting coverage for $0 a month, she says. “There hasn't been an option this cheap in a while.”

Tax credits and cost-sharing subsidies help make monthly premiums low and significantly reduce individual deductibles, ultimately reducing out-of-pocket costs for healthcare for qualifying Americans.  Most Mississippians qualify for government assistance through the Affordable Care Act to help pay for the cost of health coverage, making insurance affordable and usable for working individuals and families.

MHAC personnel are certified “navigators,” meaning they are unbiased experts who, at no cost, can help individuals and families decide on the best coverage option.

“If you have questions or think you might be eligible for affordable coverage through the government Marketplace, it is crucial not to wait,” Rehner says. “With the deadline to enroll quickly approaching, contact a navigator in your area to get enrolled quickly and accurately.”

MHAC assistance is available over the phone or in-person Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or on Saturdays by appointment only.
