Southern Miss to Host 2017 Jazz and Blues Festival April 15

It's that swingin' time of the year again for The University of Southern Mississippi's annual Jazz and Blues Festival held at the University's Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

Family and friends are invited to enjoy the jammin' sounds of trumpets flaring and voices bellowing during the 2017 Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival, slated for Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the South Lawn of the Gulf Park campus.

“The annual Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival is our largest public event, and we look forward to hosting our University and coastal community for a day filled with great music, food, and family fun on our beautiful beachfront campus,” said Dr. Steve Miller, vice president for the Southern Miss Gulf Park campus.

The 2017 Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival will feature performances by seven popular bands and artists from the Gulf Coast and neighboring states, such as Shea Ladner, the Coast Big Band, Army Jazz Band, and the Sofia Goodman Group.

The Jazz and Blues Festival will host approximately 40 vendors, offering arts and crafts and food throughout the festival grounds. Festival T-shirts and posters will also be available for purchase during the event.

Student organizations at the Gulf Park campus will provide a number of children's activities, such as carnival games, face painting, an obstacle course and a bounce house. Children will also get to meet Seymour and the Easter Bunny and participate in an Easter egg hunt, beginning promptly at 11 a.m. for ages 12 and under.

The musical lineup for the 2017 Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival is as follows:

Main stage:

  • 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Coast Big Band
  • 12:15 – 12:45 p.m. Shea Ladner
  • 1– 2 p.m. Army Jazz Band
  • 2:30 – 4 p.m. Jesse Loya and the House Katz
  • 4:30 – 6 p.m. The Sofia Goodman Group

Side stage:

  • 2 – 2:30 p.m. Jimmy Robinson
  • 4 – 4:30 p.m. Jimmy Robinson

The Jazz and Blues Festival is sponsored by the Offices of the Vice Provost and Vice President at the Gulf Park campus, Gulf Park Student Government Association, and Gulf Park Physical Plant.
