Southern Miss Physical Education Student Finalist for National Award

James Fox, a student in The University of Southern Mississippi's School of Kinesiology, is a finalist for a national physical education major award. Fox will be recognized at the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) Convention in Boston in March.

“James is one of the top physical education students in the country, and he represents what we want our students to learn and experience in physical education program,” said Dr. Robert Doan, an assistant professor of physical education. “We are very proud of him and he is a representation of what other students can accomplish at Southern Miss.”

Doan said being a finalist is great honor for Fox and the School of Kinesiology, as there are hundreds of physical education programs in the nation with thousands students. During the spring 2017 semester, Fox has been completing his student teaching practicum at Marsh Point Elementary School in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. 

“It is an incredible honor to be recognized on the national level,” said Fox. “I feel undeserving but it goes to show you can do anything you set your mind to with effort and dedication.”

Fox plans to pursue his master's degree in physical education and teach elementary physical education in the Palm Beach County School District. “I have a love for physical education and I hope I can be an example to those who follow,” said Fox.
