Perhaps nothing could ever top the thrill of capturing an Olympic gold medal, but University of Southern Mississippi alumna Tori Bowie now owns a distinction that might certainly be considered as prestigious.
In addition to Olympic champion, you also can call her the fastest woman in the world. Bowie shocked a star-studded field by capturing the 100-meter dash at the World Track and Field Championships last Sunday in London with a time of 10.85 seconds.
The 26-year-old from Sand Hill, Miss., came from midway through the pack over the final 20 meters to close in on frontrunner, Marie-Josee Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast. A determined lean at the end enabled Bowie to nip Ta Lou by .01 of a second. With the victory, she became the first U.S. woman to win the 100-meter world title since Carmelita Jeter in 2011.
Bowie, a 2012 USM graduate, claimed three medals during the 2016 Summer Olympics: a gold as part of the 4 X 100 meter relay; a silver in the 100-meter dash, and a bronze in the 200-meter event.
