USM College of Nursing Specialist Earns Elite Simulation Certification

Xavier L. Agee, simulation & IT specialist in The University of Southern Mississippi's College of Nursing, has earned unique distinction as the state's only Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS).
Agee, a Bay Springs, Miss., native, has been a member of the Southern Miss nursing staff since 2012. He acquired the CHSOS title recently following an extensive national certification process which requires applicants to hold two years' experience in a healthcare simulation operations role; obtain three professional references, and pass a grueling national exam.
“This certification provides professional recognition of my specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities in the world of healthcare simulation,” said Agee. “It will bring a greater chance of being accepted to present and share my knowledge with individuals in the field of healthcare simulation on a national or international level.”
Agee works with students who participate in clinical simulation experiences using the College of Nursing's high fidelity human patient simulator manikins. The state-of-the-art simulation lab is a glistening feature of Asbury Hall, which houses the College of Nursing. The $31-million facility opened for classes in January at the beginning of the 2017 spring semester.
Dr. Katherine Nugent, Dean of the College of Nursing, points out that clinical simulation serves as an integral component of the curriculum, providing the opportunity for students to experience a variety of medical conditions that they may not see in the clinical area.
“Xavier's certification, in addition to his experience and his leadership in recognizing what simulation and technology are needed for our educational experience, brings validity to our dream of having an accredited simulation center,” said Nugent.
