USM Gulf Park to Host STEM Event for High School Students Jan. 14

Students, ninth through 12th grade, are invited to attend the Science Careers and Research Encounters program slated for Saturday, Jan. 14 at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach.
Hosted by the School of Social Work, Department of Biological Sciences, and Center for Science and Mathematics Education, the Science Careers and Research Encounters program is designed to educate secondary students, teachers and counselors about career and research options within the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Made possible through the Gulf Region Health Outreach Program, this year marks the third time the program has been hosted at the Gulf Park campus, which will take place in Lloyd Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The program is free and will consist of a keynote speaker and three breakout sessions.
“At this event, students have the opportunity to interact and speak with professionals working in the sciences,” said Dr. Jennifer Walker, associate dean in the College of Science and Technology. “Understanding the options helps students identify the career fields they are interested in earlier and will hopefully guide them to the correct path to achieve these goals.”
During the program, students will be provided with the opportunity to:
• Receive career information and guidance associated with various fields of science
• Evaluate their abilities, interests, talents and personal characteristics to facilitate
the development of realistic academic and career goals related to sciences
• Receive information on existing educational programs and training in Mississippi
• Meet and interact with researchers and scientists in an informal setting
• Tour the Science Building teaching laboratories
“Working with students through the years, we have realized that many are unaware of the careers available to them in the science disciplines,” said Dr. Shelia Brown, assistant at the Center for Science and Mathematics Education. “This program gives them a chance to speak with professionals in the field, who will help them figure out how to reach their career goals.”
