USMs Gulf Coast Library to Present Science Caf on the Coast, Wild Harvest: Foraging on the Gulf Coast

Science Café on the Coast, hosted by The University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Coast Library, will present “Wild Harvest: Foraging on the Gulf Coast” Thursday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. at the Gulf Coast Library on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

Presented by Myles Ray, Southern Miss anthropology graduate student, “Wild Harvest: Foraging on the Gulf Coast” will offer an informative discussion about the rich and diverse botanical life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Ray will discuss the uses of these locally occurring species of plants – including their use as food and medicine, ecology, phytochemistry, and role in traditional cultures – and the basic concepts of ethnobotany, foraging for plants, and their role in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals.

Science Café on the Coast is a collaboration between Southern Miss Gulf Coast Libraries, Harrison County Library System, Long Beach Public Library and Hancock County Library System. This event offers those with minimal background in science the chance to meet and discuss scientific issues in a relaxed social setting. Admission is free and open to the public.
