The University of Southern Mississippi presents its annual silent movie featuring organist Dr. Douglas Rust on October 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Marsh Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus. This event is free and is open for all to attend.

This year will feature two silent shorts: The Boat and The Haunted House, both of which feature comedic legend Buster Keaton, “The Great Stone Face”. Both films highlight Keaton's hilarious blend of physical comedy with his ever-present deadpan expression.

“In the era of silent movies, musicians improvised the soundtrack live at each showing of a film," said Associate Director and Associate Professor of Theory Dr. Douglas Rust. “This event recreates that dynamic and is a fun experience for all to enjoy.”

This light-hearted occasion begins with The Boat, a 1921 film starring Buster Keaton as a boat builder. Keaton goes through one hilarious disaster after another just to build and sail (and ultimately wreck) his precious boat Damfino.

Another 1921 comedy: The Haunted House will conclude the evening. In this movie, Keaton plays as a bumbling bank teller who encounters a group of “ghosts” while he is on the run from a heist he never committed.

The annual Silent Movie has quickly become a Halloween tradition at USM, with Dr. Rust bringing the silent films to life with his outstanding improvisational organ playing. This event has recently featured iconic films such as 1925's The Phantom of the Opera.
