Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast set for Jan. 15 on Hattiesburg Campus

The Mu Gamma Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will present the 12th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ecumenical and Multicultural Prayer Breakfast Monday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 a.m. in the ballroom of The University of Southern Mississippi's Thad Cochran Center at its Hattiesburg campus. Admission is free.
The theme for this year's prayer breakfast is “Our Chance…Our Choice.” Keynote speaker for the event will be Southern Miss alumnus Michael Marks, a retired award-winning Mississippi educator who currently serves as public relations coordinator for Forrest General Hospital's Marketing and Public Relations Department.
“Having received the Community Service Award at the 9th annual MLK Prayer Breakfast, I am deeply honored to return to my alma mater two years later to deliver the keynote address at this great event," Marks said. "As a student at Southern Miss, I was afforded every opportunity to succeed in a diverse environment. From Honors College to Greek Life to marching band, the question was never could I participate in university student success, but how would I participate. The beauty of Dr. King's dream is that its tradition never loses value.”
Presentations by the fraternity will also be made at the event to honor local residents,
including its Community Service Award; Community Impact Award; Humanitarian Award;
John Hope Franklin Award; and Douglass T. Baker Award.
“Alpha Phi Alpha welcomes everyone to this annual event, as we continue to spread
Dr. King's message of compassion for others,” said Dr. Eddie Holloway, chairman of
the MLK Jr. Prayer Breakfast Committee and dean of students at USM. “He left a legacy
of service to mankind, and a dream for our progression.”
