DuBard School to Host Dyslexia Awareness Month Proclamation

Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker will gather with staff at the DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi and dyslexia education specialists from throughout the city to proclaim October as Dyslexia Awareness Month in Hattiesburg. The event will be held on Oct. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at the DuBard School on USM's Hattiesburg campus.

Dyslexia is one of the most common learning disabilities and can be a detriment to a child's development by inhibiting his or her interpretation of spoken and written language. With proper diagnosis, individuals with dyslexia can be taught appropriate methods of learning that enable them to excel.

Recognized nationally, October will be designated as Dyslexia Awareness Month in Hattiesburg in an effort to bring awareness to the need for dyslexia services and enlighten others on the education and training available to meet those needs within our city.

“While we hope this effort encourages others to learn more about dyslexia, we also want to use it as a time to recognize the parents, teachers and professionals who assist individuals with dyslexia. It is because of those individuals that we are able to see great advancement among children and adults with oral and written language disorders,” said Missy Schraeder, M.S., CCC-SLP CALT-QI, DuBard School Interim Director.
