History Professor to Present Lecture on Beauvoir Oct. 18

Wed, 10/17/2018 - 11:23am

Dr. Susannah Ural, professor of history at The University of Southern Mississippi, will present the lecture “Beauvoir: Mississippi's Confederate Home” Thursday, Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building, room 101 on the Hattiesburg campus. This event is the first Phi Alpha Theta (history honor society) lecture of the 2018 fall semester; admission is free and the public is invited.

Beauvoir is best known as the post-Civil War home of Confederate States President Jefferson Davis, but it was also a home for Confederate veterans and their wives and widows from 1903-957. Dr. Ural's lecture will focus on the men and women who lived there, and how Beauvoir challenges what historians thought they knew about Confederate veteran facilities.

An expert on the American Civil War, Dr. Susannah Ural serves as co-director of USM's Dale Center for the Study of War and Society. Read more about her work on Beauvoir on the Dale Center blog: https://dalecentersouthernmiss.wordpress.com/…/beauvoir-ve…/.
