The area surrounding Bennett Auditorium has undergone an extensive landscape upgrade.

Anyone traversing The University of Southern Mississippi's Hattiesburg campus will quickly notice the emphasis placed on greenery and green spaces. Live oak trees, flowering shrubs and lush lawns adorn the University's landscape.

In recent weeks a highly visible and well-traveled section of the campus has undergone a much-needed facelift. Not only has the entire area surrounding Bennett Auditorium received new sodding, but flower beds lining the venerable building have been entirely overhauled. Bennett Auditorium, built in 1930, is situated in the heart of the campus, just a short walk from the Lucas Administration Building.

University officials point out that the refurbished area has been on the upgrade radar for some time. However, plans were put on hold until repairs to the Administration Building could be completed. The project, estimated at $40,000 is being funded through private contributions.

“This area has been designated as one of the spots to receive the highest level of maintenance by our grounds team,” said Loren Erickson, superintendent of campus landscape. “The goal was to complete the landscape update from Hardy Street through to the Hub. Once you have entered our campus, the views are now enhanced from the Lucas Administration Building all the way through to Centennial Green.”

In addition to the expansive sodding, the project includes a new irrigation system where none existed previously. Among the new plantings are sweet olive bushes, azalea bushes, Black-Eyed Susan flowers and Teddy Bear Magnolia trees.

“With this work I believe we have created a more inviting, and the same time, low maintenance space in which students can live, work and learn,” said Erickson.
