Saturday Gifted Studies Program Registration Underway

The Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies' 2019 Saturday Gifted Studies Program will take place on the five consecutive Saturdays between Jan. 12 and Feb. 9, 2019 on the Hattiesburg campus of The University of Southern Mississippi. The theme for this year's program is Full STEAM Ahead: Exploring Arts and Sciences in Tandem. Students at each level will experience courses focusing on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.
The Program consists of five Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. until noon, and is designed for intellectually gifted students in pre-kindergarten (age 3) through eighth grade. Eligibility requirements include an intelligence quotient (IQ) of 121 or above on an individually administered test, or a score at or above the 91st percentile on a nationally normed achievement test. The program enhances the cognitive abilities of gifted students through planned enrichment/acceleration activities.
The following courses will be offered:
3 & 4-Year old Pre-K Class
Shade, Soil, Sand, and Snow!
Come explore the forests, fields, deserts, and tundra! Every day we will explore the weather and wildlife of a different part of this wide world we live in. If you have a hankering to hike through forests, beaches, and mountain trails, then this is the class for you! Students will experience hands-on activities that introduce them to the biomes of the world and the animals that live there. Basic concepts of conservation and preservation will be introduced with help from our friends at the Hattiesburg Zoo!
Grades K &1: Students take both courses.
Rhythm, Rhyme and Poetry Time
Are you always tapping your toes? Do you dance around the dining table? Are songs running around in your brain all day? If that describes you, then you will love this class! Learn about music styles and the science of sound. Listen carefully to pick out rhymes, copy and create rhythms, and sing along. You can even try your hand at creating a musical instrument from things you might find around your home – even in the refrigerator!

Science of the Senses
Are you always distracted by things you see, hear, feel, or smell? How does your brain register all the information you are constantly taking in from your body? Learn what happens to all of those signals after they reach your brain. This class will help you understand how your senses affect your ability to focus, plan, and learn from everything around you. Get a wiggle on and join us!
Grades 2 & 3: Students take both courses.
Dramatis Personae
Wow – that's Latin for “Who's in this play?” Do you enjoy acting out scenes from books? Do you repeat the lines from your favorite movies? – with accents? Then this is where you will feel right at home! Come explore the world of the theater and learn basic acting skills and techniques. Try your hand had creating your own script for a short scene. From lights, to costumes, to the basics of blocking, we will cover it all.

Rock your World!
How many times has your mom said to you – “why are their ROCKS in the dryer!?!” – because your latest collector's item got left in your pocket? Do you constantly need more sand for that rock tumbler you got for your birthday? Do you ever wonder exactly how we get clean water from natural springs, or how gasoline gets from the ground into the pump? If any of those things spark your curiosity – like sparkles in mica – then this is the place for you! We will learn about rocks, minerals, fossils, and other things that go on underground.
Grades 4 & 5: Students take both courses.
AutobiARTgraphy:
Are their more doodles in your notebook than math problems? Or even doodles made OUT of your math problems? Do you wish you could draw people – or anything? Are you dying to share your ideas, but not in words? This class will not only introduce the elements of design, but will also help students explore the habit of Art Journaling. Who knows, you may be the next Picasso!

Spy Master Junior:
If codebreaking and mysteries are your thing, this is where you belong. This class will focus on revealing the secrets used to capture some of the world's most notorious spies. Learn basic tools of detectives and forensic scientists. Solve puzzles, break out, and expose the secrets! We will cover everything from the thought process of problem solving to secrets of investigation.
Grades 6-8: Students select one of the following courses.
Circuits and Such
Are you the one who always builds a clock from a potato for the science fair? Does your dad call you first when the garage door refuses to open? Come learn the basics of electronic engineering with us! We will explore solar power, build circuits, and program parts. Learn about all the things you can do with your newfound skills. Who knows – you may be the one to invent the next greatest piece of electronics the world can't do without!
