The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Gallery of Art and Design will host its 2018 Southern Miss Ceramics National beginning on Oct. 12.

This month-long occasion will include the gallery exhibition, an awards ceremony, a lecture presentation by Anthony Stellaccio, and a ceramics workshop and studio demonstration by Benjie Heu. All aspects of this event are free and open to the public. This event is presented in part by the generous support of Partners for the Arts.

The show is a national juried biennial exhibition of ceramic sculpture and contemporary pottery forms created by some of the top-ranking artists from across the country. The exhibition will be available for viewing until Nov. 2.

“The Ceramics National exhibition and events are developed to enhance the education of the USM students, and to broaden their understanding and appreciation of the contemporary ceramic arts,” said Museum Director and Associate Professor Mark Rigsby. “At the same time, it provides a rich and unique gallery experience for members of the local and surrounding communities.”

Visiting artist Benjie Heu, winner of the 2016 Ceramics National Best in Show, will hold a Ceramics Workshop on Oct. 24 & 25, from 11-1 p.m. and 3-6 p.m. each day at the 3D Arts Building (2905, West 4th Street). Heu will also present a lecture about his work on October 24 at 6 p.m. in the same location.

On Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m., featured artist and juror, Anthony Stellaccio, will give a lecture at the International Center 101, which will soon be followed by the Awards Reception in the Gallery of Art and Design, at the George Hurst Building on the Hattiesburg campus.

The Ceramics National was first organized in 2016. After only its inaugural year, this event has gained the reputation as one of the best ceramics exhibitions in the Southeast. This year's exhibition features 65 works by 48 artists from 23 states across the U.S.
