SouthernCare Hospice Services of Hattiesburg recently presented a financial gift to the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families to provide supplemental program funding to assist deserving student-veterans enrolled at the University.

The gift was provided through the Grace Foundation, which is the charitable organization supporting SouthernCare Hospice in reaching out to local communities. The financial support provided by SouthernCare will be used to supplement the existing “Textbooks for Troops” program and further provide monies to support overall Student-Veteran support activities.

“We are grateful to Southern Care and the Grace Foundation for making such a wonderful financial contribution to our program,” said Veterans Center Director Jeff Hammond. “Such a caring gesture by such a thoughtful organization as SouthernCare Hospice Services goes a long way in reducing the financial burden for many of our student-veterans and military family members.”

This partnership between the USM Veterans Center and SouthernCare Hospice Services began over a year ago when volunteer coordinator Jessica Moreau reached out to the center for assistance in collaborating with Phi Mu Sorority (Alpha Omicron Chapter) to host a dance for 92-year-old Navy veteran Paul Sonnier.

According to Jessica Moreau, “The staff at the Veterans Center on-campus has been very gracious of their time both with Mr. Sonnier and the Collins Veteran Home 4th of July celebration.”

"SouthernCare has worked with the USM Veterans Center in the past demonstrating a strong commitment to providing the highest quality care to Veteran patients and their families. According to SouthernCare Director Jordan Ferrell, “We feel it's very important to see the camaraderie among veterans and the center at Southern Miss was a great choice for this donation because of the great service they provide the student veteran population.”

SouthernCare Hospice has been serving the Hattiesburg community since 1999 providing support to residents and military veterans residing within a 60-mile radius. The Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families shares with SouthernCare in taking great pride in serving our proud Veterans.

“The Student-Veteran volunteer sacrifice on behalf of our Nation does not go unrecognized by USM or local businesses such SouthernCare.  Our USM Veterans Center and many other local community supporters continue to reach-out in seeking local community support for our many on-campus programs such as “Textbooks for Troops” and our scholarship opportunities,” said Center Outreach Coordinator Doug Robinson.
