Monday, Sept. 3, 1:46 p.m. - South Mississippi Expected to Feel the Impacts of Tropical Storm Gordon
The University of Southern Mississippi's operations along the Gulf Coast, including the Gulf Park Campus, the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory and the John C. Stennis Space Center, will be closed Tuesday, Sept. 4, in preparation of predicted severe weather from Tropical Storm Gordon. All Tuesday day and night classes on the Gulf Coast will not meet, and faculty and staff, with the exception of essential personnel, are not expected to report to work.
Operations on the Hattiesburg campus are scheduled to begin as usual on Tuesday morning, but campus will close at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday night classes will not meet.
Hurricane and Storm Surge Warnings are currently in effect for the three coastal counties of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson, as Tropical Storm Gordon approaches the Gulf Coast. Current predictions are for the storm to make landfall on the Mississippi Gulf Coast as a Category One hurricane Tuesday evening.Heavy rainfall and the potential for high winds and associated flooding are the greatest threats for hazardous weather as part of the storm, but tornadoes cannot be ruled out. While conditions on the Hattiesburg campus are not predicted to be as severe, heavy rainfall, flooding and high winds are all possible beginning late Tuesday evening and overnight.
University officials are in contact with local emergency management agencies on the Gulf Coast and in Hattiesburg, and will continue monitoring weather conditions surrounding this system.
If Wednesday's operations are affected, the University's Eagle Alert system will again be activated to notify members of the University community no later than 5 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
