USM Faculty Artist Series presents Cellist Alexander Russakovsky on Sept. 24

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) School of Music presents a Faculty Artist Series recital, featuring cellist Dr. Alexander Russakovsky with accompanist Yumi Nomoto at 8 p.m. on Sept. 24. Located in Marsh Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus, the event is free and open to the public.

Musical selections for this recital include Two Pieces for Cello and Piano by Anton Webern, Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 40 by Dmitri Shostakovich, Sonatina for Cello and Piano (H.42) by Arthur Honegger, and Schelomo: Rhapsodie Hébraïque by Ernest Bloch.

“The Monday night program includes some of the greatest works written for cello in the early twentieth century,” said Professor of Cello, Dr. Alexander Russakovsky. “The laconic language and harmonic intensity of the two miniatures for cello and piano by a 15-year-old Anton Webern foretell the characteristic terseness of the composer's future style.”

Alexander Russakovsky has studied the cello at the Leningrad Conservatory under renowned Russian professors Emmanuel Fishman and Anatoli Nikitin. He has also been the recipient of many awards, including the Angela and Maurice M. Clairmont Competition in Tel Aviv, and the Performing Arts Scholarship Foundation Competition in Santa Barbara.
