A century of student journalism will be recognized at The University of Southern Mississippi's (USM) 2018 Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) Symposium on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the university's school newspaper, the Student Printz.

“Cheers to 100 Years! A Celebration of the Student Newspaper” will be held on the Hattiesburg campus and highlight the successes of the publication and profound effect it has had on Southern Miss and the Hattiesburg community through the years. The symposium will also observe the accomplishments of those who served on the newspaper's staff during their time at Southern Miss, and after their time at the university embarked on careers in journalism or other professions in service to their communities.

Events include a ticketed luncheon at which three extraordinary journalists who are former Student Printz staffers will be inducted into the Southern Miss MCJ Hall of Fame at noon. A panel discussion open to all students, faculty and guests will follow at 1:30 p.m. in room 218 of the Thad Cochran Center, and College Hall will be open for tours beginning at 3 p.m.

The day's programming concludes with an opening reception for the “Cheers to 100 Years: A Celebration of Students Delivering the News” exhibit in the Joseph Cook Library Art Gallery, where bound editions of the Student Printz will be available to view along with other student newspaper memorabilia.

“Student journalism has a rich history at Southern Miss that began in 1918 with the Normal College News, changed to the Teachers College News before morphing into the Student Printz in 1927, and has continued to be the main communication channel from students and for students,” said Chuck Cook, the current Student Printz News Content Adviser and a former Printz student journalist from 1979-81.

"The exhibit will feature some of that history, including how the Printz acquired its unique name. On the same day, we will induct three former Southern Miss student journalists who made their mark in the professional journalism world. It will be a great day of celebrating."

Tickets for the luncheon are $35, and can be purchased online or by contacting Mandy Nace at 601.266.4258, or by email at amanda.tilleyFREEMississippi.
