The University of Southern Mississippi Art & Design program will host designer/author Bryony Gomez-Palacio for a lecture at 6 p.m. on Nov. 8 on the Hattiesburg campus. The lecture is free and open to the public and will take place in Gonzalez Auditorium in the Liberal Arts Building.

Born and raised in Mexico City, Bryony Gomez-Palacio is a graphic designer and writer now living in Bloomington, Ind. She is co-founder of UnderConsideration — a graphic design firm and publishing enterprise all rolled into one — where she manages the behind-the-scenes of the online network comprised of Brand New, FPO, Quipsologies and The Art of the Menu. Bryony has co-authored five books with her husband and partner, Armin Vit—their most popular titles being “Graphic Design, Referenced” and the self-published “Flaunt.”

Says Sarabeth Sappington, a USM art student, “the work that Bryony Gomez-Palacio has done through Underconsideration LLC. network has been pivotal in encouraging dialogue within the design community and helping to evolve the way young designers create and talk about their work.”

USM Assistant Professor Jacob C. Cotton is spearheading this lecture. “The impact that Bryony Gomez-Palacio and Underconsideration LLC has had through their network of websites, books, and conferences on the design community should be seen as a major milestone in the history of the design industry,” said Cotton. “She has been an influencer in not just what we teach in the design classroom but how we teach in the design classroom.”

This lecture is supported by Partners for the Arts and The School of Performing and Visual Arts.
