USMs Childrens Centers Turner Graduates from ASHA Leadership Program

“I love that our clinicians are always looking for ways to better themselves, expand their knowledge in their field, and find new ways to treat the little ones in their care,” said Sarah Case-Price, director of The Children's Center for Communication and Development at The University of Southern Mississippi. And in this particular instance, Case-Price is referring to Dr. Courtney Turner, a Center audiologist.

Turner is one of just 28 professionals across the country to have recently graduated from the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA)'s annual Leadership Development Program.

“I'm so grateful to have been selected to be part of this program,” said Turner. “I know without a doubt that I will carry the skills I've learned over the past year into my work here at The Children's Center. I am graduating from this program having gained a wealth of knowledge, the confidence to seek out new leadership opportunities within state associations, and a new network of committed professionals in my field.”

An essential part of ASHA's year-long Leadership Development Program is to propose, plan, and successfully execute a major project within one's community. Turner fulfilled this challenge by planning and hosting The Children's Center's 2018 Hearing Loss Summit, which featured renowned expert in the area of child hearing loss, Dr. Carol Flexer.

The workshop provided a wonderful training opportunity for professionals and parents of children with hearing loss on the importance of early intervention and the most effective ways to facilitate communication.

Turner officially graduated from ASHA's Leadership Development Program on June 12, 2018.
