USM Symphony Orchestra presents Viva Mexico! On Nov. 8

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Symphony Orchestra continues its 2018-2019 season with ¡Viva Mexico! on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.
The program will consist of Wolf Totem by Tan Dun, Huapango by Moncayo, Sensemaya by Revueltas, and Danzon No. 2 by Marquez.
“We welcome conductor Jorge Perez-Gomez to the stage for an exciting evening of music from Mexico and China,” said Director Dr. Michael Miles. “Exotic tunes and ancient culture intertwine, whisking the audience away on a musical journey.”
Perez-Gomez will be joined on the program by USM's outstanding double bass faculty member, Marco Machado, performing an exciting new work by contemporary Chinese composer Tan Dun: Wolf Totem, which is inspired by Jiang Rong's best-selling book Wolf Totem.
The second half of the program will be a tribute to music by composers of Mexican descent. Huapango is a roaring rendition of the Mexican folk dance by the same name, Silvestre Revueltas' Sensemayá has been called “the Mexican Rite of Spring” due to its dramatic, driving rhythmic sensations, and Danzón No. 2 by Arturo Márquez is a tribute to the danzón dance style.
