Womens History Month Activities at Southern Miss Begin March 1

The Committee on Services and Resources for Women (CSRW) at The University of Southern Mississippi is sponsoring events and activities to mark national Women's History Month, beginning with a talk March 1 by accomplished corporate and private attorney, Paige Goldman, from 5:30-7 p.m. at Asbury Hall, room 124 on the Hattiesburg campus. Admission is free, and a reception will follow.
Goldman's presentation is titled “Women Who Persisted to Conquer and Inspire in Mississippi.” A graduate of Hattiesburg High School, Goldman is an alumna of Vanderbilt University and the Georgetown University Law Center, where she obtained her juris doctorate.
This year's Women's History Month theme at Southern Miss is “Nevertheless she persisted: Honoring women who fight all forms of discrimination against women.” Dr Melanie Leuty, associate professor of psychology at USM, is the CSRW's 2017-18 committee chair.
According to Dr. Leuty, Women's History Month is an opportunity to recognize the important contributions of women and girls to society. Dr. Leuty said that, moreover, during current social movements to recognize the oppression of marginalized groups, Women's History Month and associated events give voice to women of all backgrounds in order that they be recognized and heard.
“Through the schedule of events and activities the USM CSRW has established for Women's History Month, it is our goal that members of the USM and Hattiesburg area communities gain perspective on the life experiences and contributions of women globally, as well as women at the university and in the surrounding area,” she said.
Following Goldman's presentation March 1, the remaining Women's History Month schedule at USM's Hattiesburg campus includes the following:
*March 2: Women's Leadership Panel, 2-2:55 p.m. Trent Lott Center, room 102.
*March 5-7: Display of work by visiting artist Stacy Rathert, 3D Arts Building, 2905 West Fourth Street (next to Ferlise Ticket Office); various show times. Contact the USM Department of Art and Design at 601.266.6788 for more information.
*March 6: University Forum featuring author Angie Thomas, “The Hate U Give: Finding Your Activism,” 6:30 p.m., Bennett Auditorium.
*March 8: USM Associate Professor Dr. Kate Greene's CSRW Brown Bag presentation, “Women Singer Songwriters as Exemplary Actors: The Music of Rape and Domestic Violence,” 12:15 – 1 p.m., International Center, room 319.
*March 8: “Black Women and the Vote in America,” presented by USM Assistant Professor of History Dr. Rebecca Tuuri, 5:30-6:30 p.m., Liberal Arts Building, room 101.
*March 21: Peggy Jean Connor Research Award Winners Brown Bag presentation by Lauren Lassabe and Olivia Preston, 12-1 p.m., International Center, room 319.
*March 21-23: Nikki Taylor of Collage Dance, Contemporary Ballet Guest Artist in Residency, Studio 115, Theater and Dance Building - master classes March 21, 11 a.m. -12:30 p.m. and March 22 from 12:45 – 2:15 p.m.; discussion on pursuing dance as a professional, March 22, 4 p.m.; and repertory workshops, March 23 from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 1-2:30 p.m.
*March 22: “Gender, Age and Women's Suffrage in Britain,” presented by Dr. Jill Abney, USM Department of History, 5:30-6:30 p.m., Liberal Arts Building, room 101.

*April- May: “What Were You Wearing?” exhibit on sexual violence, Cook Art Gallery, co-sponsored by the Shafer Center for Crisis Intervention and the CSRW.
