2019 Ezra Jack Keats Award Winners Announced
The Ezra Jack Keats Foundation, in partnership with the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection at The University of Southern Mississippi, announced earlier this week the winners of the 2019 Ezra Jack Keats Award. Each year an outstanding writer and illustrator are recognized early in their careers for having created an extraordinary children's book that reflects the diverse nature of our culture.
The 2019 award ceremony will be held on April 4th, during the Fay B. Kaigler Children's Book Festival at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. The winning writer and illustrator will each receive $3,000 and a bronze medallion.

Spring 2019 McCarthy Lecture Series Concludes Feb. 26 with Presentation on Vietnam War Spy
The conclusion of the 14th annual Richard McCarthy Lecture Series at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) will feature a presentation by author and historian Dr. Larry Berman, based on his book "Perfect Spy: The Incredible Double Life of Pham Xuan An, Time Magazine Reporter and Vietnamese Communist Agent,” Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building 101.

University of Southern Mississippi students in Hattiesburg and at the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach will serve a cause bigger than themselves through “The Big Event” Saturday, Feb. 23 when they assist community agencies, schools and charities with a variety of service initiatives. This is the ninth year USM has engaged in the program that students at other colleges and universities across the country also take part in by assisting with community service projects mutually beneficial for volunteers and recipient organizations.
