Annual Children's Book Festival Begins Wednesday on Hattiesburg Campus

An award-winning author considered among the best in the fantasy genre will be honored at the 52nd annual Fay B. Kaigler Children's Book Festival, set for Wednesday-Friday, April 3-5 at The University of Southern Mississippi's (USM) Hattiesburg campus.

Tamora Pierce, renowned for her young adult fantasy books and who breaks norms by featuring female heroines in her work, will be presented with the Southern Miss Medallion, the festival's top award, during its Medallion Session from 10:15 – 11:15 a.m. Thursday, April 4. The festival, which also includes presentation of the Ezra Jack Keats Awards, is presented annually by the USM School of Library and Information Science.

Human Trafficking Will Be Focus of Conference on Hattiesburg Campus April 5-6

One of the top criminal activities in the world, human trafficking, will be the focus of The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Center for Human Rights and Civil Liberties' 4thconference, “Human Trafficking: Awareness and Action” set for Friday April 5 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 6 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. in rooms 101-102 of the Liberal Arts Building on the USM Hattiesburg campus. This free event is open to the public. USM's University Forum is co-sponsoring Friday's keynote talk by Jeanette Westbrook, a human rights advocate who serves on United Nations panels working to combat trafficking.

Expert on Court Testimony Presenter for April 11 Colloquium Sponsored by School of Psychology, Pine Grove

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) School of Psychology is co-sponsoring a special colloquium with Pine Grove Behavioral and Addiction Services featuring Dr. Stan Brodsky, professor emeritus at the University of Alabama, April 11 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Thad Cochran Ballrooms on the USM Hattiesburg campus. His presentation is titled “Testifying in Court: The Expert Expert Witness” and will be followed by a question and answer session.

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Student Government Association, the Shafer Center for Crisis Intervention, Student Counseling Services, and the Committee on Services and Resources for Women have collaborated to bring back the "What Were You Wearing?" Survivor Art Installation for Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2019. Housed in the Cook Library Learning Commons Gallery on the USM Hattiesburg campus, this exhibit opens today, April 2 with a reception from 4-6 p.m. and includes the stories of local survivors of sexual assault.
