Native American Historian to give presentation Feb. 19 on Hattiesburg Campus

The University of Southern Mississippi's (USM) Center for the Study of the Gulf South will host a talk by historian Dr. James Hill Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. on the Hattiesburg campus when he presents "'Bring Them What They Lack': Spanish-Creek Exchange and Alliance Making in a Maritime Borderland, 1763-1783." This free program will be held in room 101 of the Liberal Arts Building.
Dr. Hill uses ethno-historical approaches to study Native American history, as well as Latin American History and the broader Atlantic World. His presentation at USM will focus on his recent research on connections between Muskogee Creek Indians and Spanish Havana, and his examination of English and Spanish language sources yields fresh insight into Creek and Seminole diplomatic efforts to defend their territorial and political power by forging transatlantic networks; manipulating and appropriating European concepts of sovereignty; and participating in an international community.
“Dr. Hill's presentation should be of particular interest to students, faculty members and others engaged or interested in American Indian, Southern, Latin American, and Caribbean Studies,” said USM Assistant Professor of History Dr. Joshua Haynes.
A lecturer at Mississippi State University, Dr. Hill earned his Ph.D. from the College of William & Mary in 2016. He has published articles in several journals, including in the prestigious Early American Studies journal (Winter 2014), published by the University of Pennsylvania's McNeil Center for Early American Studies, and the Florida Historical Quarterly. He has received numerous awards and fellowships from organizations such as the McNeil Center, the John Carter Brown Library, the Huntington Library, the Newberry Library, and the David Library of the American Revolution.
