The founder of what would become The University of Southern Mississippi's (USM) Public Health program will be honored at a symposium April 18 on the Hattiesburg campus, featuring a lecture given by the head of the Mississippi State Department of Health (MDH).

Dr. Thomas Dobbs, director of the MDH, will be the keynote speaker at the event set from 1-3 p.m. in Asbury Hall, room 124, which will include a ceremony honoring USM Public Health program founder Dr. Lynn C. Hartwig.
Dr. Dobbs' presentation topic will be "The State of Public Health in Mississippi.”

USM President Emeritus Dr. Aubrey K. Lucas will greet attendees with opening remarks.

A portrait of Dr. Hartwig, commissioned by her family, will be hung in Elizabeth Harkins Hall, located near Asbury Hall, following its unveiling. Dr. Hartwig founded the Center for Community Health, which evolved into the Public Health program at USM. Her family endowed a scholarship in her name following her death in 1996.

“We're looking forward to having Dr. Dobbs on campus to share his thoughts on public health in our state, and to honor Dr. Hartwig, a person who made her mark in this field and in the lives of so many USM students over the years,” said Gina Fiorentini-Wright, an instructor in the USM Public Health program.
