USM Celebrating Womens History Month in March

The important and lasting contributions to America's story that women have made and continue to make will be recognized throughout March at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) during Women's History Month.
Supported in part by USM's Committee on Services and Resources for Women (CSRW), Women's History Month programing at the university will feature educational programming in the form of lectures and roundtable and panel discussions on a variety of topics, as well as dance performances. Admission to these events is free.
Women's History Month events begin Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 5:30 p.m. with the panel discussion “Six Women and the Black Experience in Hattiesburg, 1950-2018” at the Hattiesburg Public Library, with USM Assistant Professor of History Dr. Rebecca Tuuri serving as panel moderator. This program overlaps with the conclusion of Black History Month events at USM; Women's History Month programming events continue as follows in March:
March 7: Janet Allured, “Mississippi Methodist Women and The Woman's Society of Christian Service: Leaders of Social Justice in the South,” 6:30 p.m. in room 116, Asbury Hall, USM Hattiesburg campus.
March 19: Dr. Allison Abra, USM assistant professor of history, “Overlooked No More: Women's History in Classroom and Beyond,” 5 p.m. in room 108 (Gonzales Auditorium) Liberal Arts Building, USM Hattiesburg campus.
March 20: Dr. Suzy Kim, Rutgers University, “Beyond the Iron Curtain: Cold War Women in North Korea,” 6 p.m., Liberal Arts Building, USM Hattiesburg campus.
March 21: Keltoum Rowland, USM Instructor of French, “Simone Veil: Survivor, feminist, politician, and 20th-century French icon,” 6:30 p.m. room 108 (Gonzales Auditorium), Liberal Arts Building, USM Hattiesburg campus.
March 22: Dr. Dana Fennel, Dr. Allison Abra, Amy Ellefson, CSRW Grant Winners Symposium, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., 317 BB Asbury Hall, USM Hattiesburg campus.
March 22: “Visionary Women: An Evening of Dance Celebrating Women's History Month,” 7 p.m., Studio 115, Theatre and Dance Building, USM Hattiesburg campus
March 25: Col. Sheila Varnado, “Women in the Military: How We Support Peace,” 12:30 - 1:30 p.m., Cook Library Art Gallery, USM Hattiesburg campus.
March 25: "Women in Mississippi Politics," 5:30 p.m. Hardy Hall Ballroom, Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach. This program will feature a bi-partisan panel of female politicians from south Mississippi reflecting on their careers in local and state politics. March 27: USM Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Dee Dee Anderson, “Lessons in Leadership as a Woman,” 11 a.m. – noon, Thad Cochran Center, room 214, Hattiesburg campus.
