Requiem

The enchanting strains of John Rutter's celebrated “Requiem” will grace the sacred halls of St. Michael Catholic Church in Biloxi, Miss., on Sunday, March 3 at 2:30 p.m., when The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) Gulf Coast Chorale takes center stage.

Under the direction of Dr. Jonathan C. Kilgore, Assistant Professor of Music and Associate Director of Choral Activities, this transcendent musical experience promises to uplift the soul and stir the heart. This Ambassador Series event is presented free of charge and the public is invited.

John Rutter's “Requiem,” a masterful fusion of traditional Latin text and English verses from the Bible, is renowned for its accessibility and melodic beauty. Inspired by a desire for intimacy, contemplation, and ultimately, illumination, Rutter's composition offers a poignant journey from darkness to light, evoking profound emotions and spiritual reflection.

Dr. Kilgore describes the performance as a blend of solemnity and splendor, transforming the Catholic Funeral mass into a captivating concert experience.

“It's a great piece,” said Dr. Kilgore, emphasizing the beauty and significance of Rutter's work. “Audience members can expect not only a musical feast but also an opportunity to immerse themselves in the serene ambiance of St. Michael Catholic Church. With its awe-inspiring architecture and reverent atmosphere, the venue provides a perfect backdrop for an unforgettable musical encounter.”

This concert holds special significance for Dr. Kilgore and the USM Gulf Coast Chorale, representing a milestone in their journey of growth and community engagement. As Dr. Kilgore leads the choir through its 29th season, he reflects on the ensemble's diverse composition and shared mission to bring music and awareness to both USM and the Gulf Coast community.
