Cathy Lanier, senior vice president and chief of security at the National Football League (NFL), will be recognized with the Milton E. Ahlerich Distinguished Leadership Award at the 2026 National Sports Safety and Security Conference and Exhibition on June 23-25, 2026, in Palm Desert, Calif. The event is presented annually by the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) at The University of Southern Mississippi.

The Milton E. Ahlerich Distinguished Leadership Award recognizes a professional whose career includes multiple achievements and contributions to sports safety and security. The recipient’s service, commitment, ingenuity and integrity must have elevated the profession to new levels to warrant this prestigious honor.

“Cathy is an absolute trailblazer in the sport safety and security industry, always leading with the safety of the American public in mind,” said Dr. Stacey Hall, NCS4 executive director. “Her leadership over the course of her career reflects a record of meaningful change, innovative thinking and effective advocacy with policymakers to ensure our response keeps pace with the evolving threat environment. Cathy was also a recipient of the Champion of Change award in 2019 and has supported NCS4 since the early years of its formation.”

Prior to serving in her current role, Lanier was the first female police chief and the longest serving chief of the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), serving from 2007 to 2016. Now, Lanier safeguards the security of all 32 NFL teams and their venues, liaises with federal, state, and local law enforcement, and ensures security for league events such as International Series Games and the Super Bowl.

“It is truly an honor to receive the Milton E. Ahlerich Distinguished Leadership Award from NCS4,” said Lanier. “Throughout my career in both public service and professional sports, I have believed that safety, security, and preparedness are about protecting people and preserving the experiences that bring communities together. I am grateful to have worked alongside so many dedicated professionals who continue to elevate this profession every day.”

Lanier will be recognized at the awards luncheon during the conference. The luncheon is sponsored by Evolv Technology, which provides weapons detection systems for security screening.
