About The Big Show & Our Programs
Welcome to The Big Show! This school-wide recruitment event for the Southern Miss School of Performing and Visual Arts is a chance for you to get to know us and allow us the opportunity to do the same with you! We are comprised of three programs – art and design, dance, and theatre – with many areas of study and types of degrees offered in each. In order to participate, you simply need to fill out the registration form with your contact information and select the program you are most interested in so we can include you in on all of the scheduled events, showings, master classes, panels, and meetings for this day. Our hope is that you finish this day feeling inspired and informed, and ideally, with the desire to continue talking with us as you consider joining us as a major in the near future! ART
Art and Design at USM is rich in tradition and poised to provide you with the tools you need for a bright future in the visual arts. Today we are excited to share our program, faculty, and students with you. During the course of the next few hours, you will learn more about our varied degree offerings, including Painting and Drawing, Sculpture and Ceramics, and Graphic Design. You will participate in demonstrations from each of our emphasis areas that highlight the types of visual arts making that is at the heart of our program. We will also have virtual spaces where you can meet face to face with our faculty and students who can answer all questions you might have. Finally, we encourage you to follow the link on this page to submit a digital portfolio for scholarship review.
DANCE
The dance program is a diverse and truly energized collective that values all that dance is and can be. Today you will experience this for yourself! Over the next few hours, you will take three master dance classes in the ballet, modern, and jazz techniques as well as see a showing of faculty and student choreographic works that will give you an idea of the kind of dancing we do at Southern Miss. You will also have an opportunity to meet dance faculty and talk with current dance majors who can answer any questions you might have. Finally, we encourage you to audition for the dance program as part of your day. This audition is 100% virtual. Just follow the link on this event page. More than anything, we are excited to get to meet and dance with you!
THEATRE
The Theatre Program is an exciting and active place to be. We celebrate our diversity and seek to find a place for everyone in main stage productions, classes, and ensembles. Today you will meet faculty and students representing the many degree programs and production areas, including BA in Theatre, the BFA (Design and Technology)and the BFA (Acting), and production opportunities in Acting, Directing, Costumes, Lighting, Sound, Scenic, Paint, Props, House Management, Producing, Technical Direction, Stage Management, and more! We would love to see any work you have! The interviews are the most important part of the day, so don’t worry if you don’t have a resume or portfolio. Relax and be yourself!
