2020 Energy Saving Program
The HVAC setback program was created as part of the IHL mandated energy reduction initiative. This campus-wide program, which involves temperature adjustments to heating and cooling of all facilities, has resulted in significant cost savings for the university.
The 2020 holiday setback program on the Hattiesburg campus will operate according to the following schedule:
Tues., Nov. 24 through Tues., Dec. 22 -- 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Wed., Dec. 23 through Fri. Jan. 1 -- 24 hours per day
Mon., Jan. 4 through Tues., Jan. 19 -- 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Research facilities (i.e. Polymer Science Building, Walker Science Building, etc.), libraries, residence halls, and areas approved via special requests, will not be impacted by the setbacks. Faculty and staff who intend to visit or work on campus during the setback hours should keep in mind that facility temperatures will be colder than usual. Please dress accordingly.
If your building contains programming or special events that you believe justify a deviation from the scheduled setback, please respond to physicalplant@usm.edu with the details of your request by 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20.
Holiday Break Suggestions
Also, it will be extremely helpful if you can once again do the following before leaving for the Winter break:
1. Power down all items (computers, printers, power strips, appliances, etc.) and disconnect them from the wall outlets.
2. Clean out refrigerators.
3. Close windows.
4. Turn off lights, fans, and other similar items.
5. Turn off fume hoods, not in use or close sashes.
6. Check thermostats in office spaces and classrooms. If adjustable, set to 60 F. Digital thermostats will be set remotely by Physical Plant.
