Limited Submission Opportunity (LSO)
Selection Advisory Panel

Many federal agencies, foundations, and private sponsors limit the number of proposals an institution may submit for a given funding opportunity. When that happens, The University of Southern Mississippi must identify the proposal or proposals that will represent the institution.

Your expertise can help make that decision.

As a member of the LSO Selection Advisory Panel, you will play a direct role in helping the University identify its most competitive submissions. Your insight helps ensure a fair, transparent, and rigorous review process while strengthening Southern Miss's ability to compete for external funding.

Why Your Participation Matters
Every limited submission represents an opportunity for Southern Miss to showcase its strongest ideas and most competitive investigators. By serving as a reviewer, you help identify promising projects, support your colleagues, and contribute to the growth of the University's research enterprise.

What to Expect
Joining the reviewer pool does not commit you to reviewing every opportunity. Instead, you may be contacted when a limited submission opportunity aligns with your expertise. If you are available to serve, ORSD will provide the review materials, evaluation criteria, timeline, and instructions needed to complete the review process.

Before participating, you will be asked to disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest to help maintain the integrity of the review process.

Recognition for Your Service
Your service on the LSO Selection Advisory Panel is recognized as university-level service. Following the review cycle, ORSD will provide you with a service letter documenting your participation and the number of limited submission opportunities you reviewed during the year. These letters may be used for annual evaluations, promotion and tenure materials, Faculty Success reporting, and other professional records.

Who Should Participate?
Faculty from all disciplines are encouraged to join the reviewer pool. Whether you are an experienced investigator, have previously served as a proposal reviewer, or are seeking additional opportunities for university service, your expertise can help strengthen the internal review process and support research success across campus.

We Need Faculty from All Disciplines
Whether you are an experienced investigator, a previously funded researcher, or simply looking for a meaningful way to contribute to the University, your perspective is valuable. We are seeking faculty from all disciplines to help build a diverse reviewer pool capable of evaluating opportunities across the full spectrum of research, scholarship, and creative activity at Southern Miss.

How It Works

  • Join the reviewer pool.
  • Receive invitations for opportunities that match your expertise.
  • Decide whether you are available to participate.
  • Review submissions and provide your assessment.
  • Help inform institutional nomination decisions.

Join the Reviewer Pool

To join, simply complete a brief form providing your contact information, areas of expertise, statement of interest, and current curriculum vitae. Keeping your information up to date helps ORSD match you with opportunities that fit your background and experience.

Your Expertise Makes a Difference
When you participate in the LSO review process, you are doing more than reviewing proposals. You are helping shape which projects move forward, supporting your colleagues' success, and strengthening Southern Miss's competitiveness for external funding.

We hope you'll consider lending your expertise to this important effort.
