Research Information Systems and Grant Analysis
Research Powered by Insight, Backed by Systems
Research Information Systems and Grant Analysis (RISGA) supports research endeavors at the university through implementation, testing, and management of research information systems and data analysis. InfoEd Global and SOARFIN’s grant modules are currently the university facing tools available to campus. RISGA also accepts data requests to help faculty with tenure review and departments with budgeting and fiscal analysis. This division also assists the Vice President for Research and the Associate Vice President for Research with the review of potential software and technology compliance in partnership with iTech.
RISGA prepares yearly and monthly reports of proposal and award data. The previous month’s report should be available by the end of the current month (for example, January’s report will be published by the end of February). The fiscal year report should be available each August following the close of the fiscal year on June 30.
University partners may need grant proposal and award data for a variety of reasons. Below are a few examples of the type of information frequently requested. We are happy to assist with other data requests as necessary.
- Proposal and award data for faculty members for tenure review.
- Proposal and award data for Disciplines, Schools, or Colleges to assist in budget planning on a fiscal or calendar year basis.
- Facilities & Administrative (F&A) dollars recouped by the School or College over a period of time.
Note: Any data requests that are being communicated outside of the university should be clearly stated to RISGA in the data inquiry.
What is salary verification?
An individual certifies that the salaries charged and cost shared to sponsored projects are reasonable in relation to the actual work (effort) performed.
Why is salary verification important?
Federal regulations require payroll costs to be documented to actual effort ensuring
external sponsors reimburse the grantee only for the time and effort expended on their
behalf.
Salary Verification is currently performed yearly at the anniversary date of the grant’s
start date and three months after the end date of the grant. Yearly verifications
cover the period of one year. Final verification covers the entire life of the grant.
There is a column for HR amounts charged, a column for any adjustments to salary (+/-), and a column for cost share charged to the grant. All must be considered to ensure effort percentages are being met.
Salary verification is considered part of an employee’s job responsibilities. Failure to fulfill this duty and adhere to USM policies and procedures could result in unverified salary and fringe expenses being transferred off the sponsored project.
What software is available for me to apply for proposals and manage my grants?
- InfoEd Global is the proposal system the university currently uses. This is the portal is the official proposal record of the university. IRB is also located in this system.
- SOARFIN is the financial management system of the university.
- SOARHR is the human resources system of the university, including the official payroll data record.
To gain access to SOARFIN, you must complete training through the Controller’s Office. Pay close attention to MDR, PDR, and journal entry as these are key to managing your grants.
For Query View access, you must email ba-financialsFREEMississippi for access consideration.
After you are granted access, if you need assistance with queries to run in Query Viewer, please contact RISGAFREEMississippi%C2%A0
All faculty and staff will have access to InfoEd within a week of their start date at the university. Training is available by request with RISGAFREEMississippi or through your Pre-Award proposal submission partner.
