College of Business and Economic Development
When classes resume on March 30, 2020, all academic course requirements will be completed online or through other remote delivery formats for the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester. A Guide to Course Completion has been created to assist you with accessing academic and technology resources.
To ensure the safety and welfare of our students and staff, the College of Business and Economic Development will not be hosting Group Advising for the remainder of the semester. However, we have developed an alternate plan to ensure that students are properly advised for the upcoming summer and fall semesters.
We ask for your continued patience and understanding as we complete the advisement process for all undergraduate business students. Since we have so many students, this process will take time, so it may be a couple of weeks before you receive your proposed schedule. Please understand that it may take your advisor a little longer than usual to respond to your questions.
Seniors Who Plan to Graduate in the Summer 2020 or Fall 2020 Semester:
You must submit your graduation application to your advisor ASAP. The application can be found in the drop-down menu in your Student Center in SOAR.
Don’t know who your academic advisor is? Check your Student Center in SOAR or click HERE to view the advising staff directory.
All Other Students on Good Academic Standing:
Your academic advisor will review your records and send to your USM email account a completed semester-by-semester guide and proposed schedule sheet. You must reply that you have received it before we can remove your advisement hold. If you have questions, please email your advisor.
Business students who have at least a 3.0, and who are not planning to graduate either this summer of fall, can choose to self-advise. If you self-advise, then you accept all responsibility for your scheduling decisions and how it affects your progression to degree. If you would like to self-advise – complete the online request form.
Students on Probation Continued or Suspension:
Since you are not currently on good academic standing, you must schedule an individual advising appointment with your academic advisor. These appointments can be conducted in person, over the phone, or via a web service. Click HERE to schedule your advising appointment.
The Hattiesburg Undergraduate Academic Services for the College of Business and Economic Development is located in Scianna Hall, Suite 2035. Undergraduate students enrolled in our college will under go advisement at the end of each semester to prepare for the next, helping students stay on track as they work towards their degree.
Group advising is a round-table teaching session where professional advising staff teach students how to properly plan and forecast their progression toward graduation. In addition to confirming course selections for the next semester, students will learn about student success strategies, important events and deadlines, and any policy changes.
When you make your appointment, you MUST have the following documents completed and ready to turn in:
With three group sessions offered four times per week, we have a wide range of time slots and days to accommodate every schedule. Students should be diligent to sign up early and not wait until the last minute. No students should miss class because of any group advising sessions. All group sessions begin promptly at their scheduled time. Latecomers will be required to reschedule their appointment.
AFTER you have attended group, you are encouraged to make private appointments with your advisor for more confidential topics or complicated situations.
Are you in Good Academic Standing? Is your GPA a 3.00 or above? Are you comfortable with planning your schedule? Have you gone through a group advising session at least once (not including orientation)? Are you at least two semesters away from graduation? If you answered yes to all of these questions, then you may complete the self-advisement form.
Please note if you choose to self-advise, you are responsible for making your schedule. If you want your schedule to be checked, or have questions about making your schedule, please make a group advisement appointment.
Anyone with an academic standing other than "Good," or with a GPA below 2.0 must schedule a follow-up advising appointment with his or her advisor (listed in SOAR) AFTER he or she has attended a group advising session. The follow-up appointment is needed to take care of academic contracts and other remediation as necessary. For more information on Academic Standing, please click here.
All advisors in Hattiesburg will use Wednesday as their walk-in day. On this day, students may ask general questions regarding their academics, but they cannot be seen for a full advising session. In order to best serve students for upcoming semester advisement, they will need to make an appointment for one of our group advising sessions.
Students who are graduating in the current or upcoming semester must make an individual degree application appointment with your advisor (listed in SOAR). These appointments are made at the main Undergraduate Academic Services Desk in Scianna Hall room 2035. Graduating students must first print their graduation application in order to make a graduation appointment.
